Consulting from Ghost and God but no caring about the human beings

Author :Chang Kai-Chi      張開基

*Note; this is the author's book article about 25 years ago.

I remember that a decade ago, when the fifth ethylene plant construction permit that had been reviewed for a long time was finally started, it was reported that the groundbreaking ceremony considered some special Fong Shui issues about specific timing. According to the master, as long as the groundbreaking was on time, the construction of this fifth ethylene factory and the operation after the completion of the work will be smooth and disaster-free. Just as the government has always been claiming the destruction of the superstition but foolishly hired the astologist and become more superstitious-- the officials are turning this major project(affecting thousands of people) into a joke. It is an amazing thing to set up a policy in such unreasonable way. As for whether it is smooth construction or not, it is not necessarily true after time has passed.

Of course, it is a good thing to break the superstition, but when it is a matter of personal especially about the fortune of future generations, the anti-superstition often becomes a whisper and immediately got ignored. When a new official takes the positions, they definitely will adjust the direction of Feng Shui.  When a famous official passed away, his family definitely would invite those astrologists to choose the burial spot. As for the people who are in the midst of career, whether he is important or not, it is an open secret about their involving fortune -telling. It is ridiculous to hire an astrologist as the long-term staff but is open public facts.

Not long ago, I heard anecdotes about the ghosts and feng shui of two ministerial figures: "A minister: one is convinced of a certain religion and always get consultation from the ghosts. It is understood that his policy guidelines are mostly resorted to the deities from the sand table. He is absolutely obedient to these deities. But the strange thing is that the deity he believes is obviously "the mana power is limited". So that he is so loyal and obedient to the deity's advise but the policy decision is always wrong. Again, the bad policies finally caused public outrage and he had to lose his career. After such a setback, he might eventually realize the meaning of the old saying "the deity is unpredictable"? Not true,  It is said that he is still convinced and continuously communicating with deities or ghosts. What he wants is to ask it is possible to turn over and realign his career back in track?

Another ministerial figure, his religious beliefs, is not known but convinced that his addiction on astrological Fong shui is a fact. It is understood that he recently hosted a groundbreaking ceremony about a major project. Many guests who were invited to observe the ceremony were all VIPs. The way the ceremony platform was built so different? ? ? Generally, such temporary podiums are built on bamboo flooring in flat ground and are laid flat at about three or four feet above the ground so that the people on the stage can be "superior", while the sides of the table were built with small steps for people to go up and down the stages.

However, the podium in front of it is built in the traditional way, but there are no stairs on the left and right sides, but the soil is directly pushed to the height of the countertop and becomes two mounds. These two mounds Pulled very long, the slope gradually slowed to the ground. Such a rostrum is really rare and rare. Why is it so strange? Later, I realized that it was the direction of the minister who served as the chairman of the groundbreaking ceremony. He listened to the guidance of a master, saying that if the table was built according to the tradition, there are stairs on both sides. When the chairman went to the stage to finish the training, he would always step down. The sign of "returning from the stage" is not good, so it is better to withdraw the ladder. Instead, the mounds that are raised by the earth are high and the height of the countertops. After the training is finished, you can step out of the clouds, instead of "going out of the stage," there will be no "flaws". The minister’s adult listened to his will and immediately explained it. However, although he was not able to participate in the mystery, he had to “satisified with his life” and asked the workers to build it.

The ridiculous thing is the minister’s insights and thoughts. What is even more ridiculous is the whimsical idea of the master. Do you not know the truth when you finally step down? Life is like a play, no matter how the stage will come out, it will be a drama, but once the play is over, it will eventually become dull. In the stage of life, why do you have a scene that never ends? Why do you have an actor who never leaves the stage? If even the presiding ceremony goes to the stage, there are taboos, and I am afraid that the bureaucrats or private houses will be bungalows. Otherwise, if I live in a building, I don’t have to go downstairs every day, and he probably only takes a flat road. Otherwise, his house in Yangmingshan (mountain area) definietly exists the downhills."

Such an example is common in ancient books. If the officials thought about benefitting the civilians then they should not be superstitious about the ghosts and deities. It is a disaster and more severe comparing with the natural ones.

If the reader does not believe, the author can excerpt two examples from the modern history to prove that: First, after the defeat of the Opium War, the Qing government signed a Sino-British "Nanjing Treaty" with the United Kingdom, in addition to the indemnity and cession of Hong Kong. There are also regulations for opening five trades. These five are Guangzhou, Xiamen, Fuzhou, Ningbo and Shanghai. After the contract, the British wanted to enter Guangzhou City, but the Guangdong people refused to do so, and actively organized the Civil Army to practice confrontation. At that time, the imperial minister of the Qing court, Yingying, tried to calm the people and made a plan to defer the impact. It requested the British troops delayed to enter the city in the next year, so as not to arouse the public.   The British people foresaw the anger of Chinese people so they accepted this suggestion Later, Ye Mingzhen was appointed Governor of Guangdong and Guangxi, and he still used a "drag" word for this matter. The British even sent several special envoys to express the concerning about when to enter the city. In the sixth year of Xianfeng, the British government sent Ba Xia Li as a consul in Guangdong. This Ba Xia Li was not a easy going figure. When he saw the negotiations ware not working, he has to adopt the military forces. He intended to attack Guangzhou and forcing the Qing court to surrender. At the same time, the famous "Yaluo Ship" incident occurred. The British just made a big fuss about it. They attacked the Huangpu Fortress and asked to enter Guangzhou City for negotiations.

However, Ye Mingzhen still did not care about it, and did not answer it at all. Therefore, Ba Xia Li once again summoned the British soldiers. He was led by the master of the division and attacked the provincial capital. The invasion was initiated and the situation was very critical. However, Ye Mingzhen was surprisingly calm--instead of dispatching troops for defense. Instead, he sat in the office and recited Lu Zu’s Zhenyan Baoxun repeatedly. Later, although the British also broke into the city gate and wanted to negotiate with him, Ye Mingzhen refused to see him. But British saw the Guangzhou soldiers were brave and strong plus difficult to defeat immediately, so they decided to temporarily retreate.

Afterwards, Guangdong Governor Bai Gui and Yan Shi Jiang Guolin met with Ye Mingzhen. He was also very proud to say: "The Yangtze River has been plagued by the Taimao Heavenly Kingdom's long-haired thief, and the people's livelihood is difficult. However, our Guangdong is still safe, although it has been chaotic for a while. There was nothing to lose. At that time, you were in a hurry, but I was not worried at all?" Both Bai and Jiang uttered withthe flattering words: "boss is really foresighted!" Ye Mingzhen stroked the beard and said: "to be honest, my family believed in Lu Zu, and now there is a statue in the Department. When the incident occurred, I have begged Lu Zu to suppress the foreigners so they immediately retreated.  That is why I can calm down!" Both his subordinates replied in unison:

"Lv Zu is really too good!" However, soon after, in order to burn the British and French business halls and the thirteen foreign banks, the British and French sent a coalition army led by the British Earl Erkkin to demand compensation. Ye Mingzhen still avoided seeing each other.  Erjin arrived Guangzhou and issued an ultimatum that was limited to forty-eight hours. However, Ye Mingzhen still calmly ignored it.
Bai Gui, Jiang Guolin and General Mukhdene saw serious incidents. They came together to ask for instructions. Mu Jun reported: "The British and French coalition forces have been under the city and they are coming to the city. We have to fight against them." Unexpectedly, Ye Mingzhen still calmly said." I have been pleading with Lu Zu and Lu Zu said: On the 15th, the matter would get fixed and the God will not lie to me. Today is twelve, and after three or four days, It will be safe and sound!" Unexpectedly, the next day, the deadline was due and British did not see any reply from Ye Mingzhen. Under the order of Erjin, the British and French allied forces launched a landing battle and immediately captured the Haizhu Fort. Thousands of Deng Anbang and the following officers and men had a total of hundreds of people killed. On the third day, the coalition forces bombarded Guangzhou City with artillery. The city was in a fire, and the officials and civilians were killed and injured. The governor’s buildings of Guangdong and Guangxi were also hit by bomb shells.

Ye Minghao was anxious at this time, but he did not forget to hold the image of Lu Zu, and fled to the left of the government to hide, and kept thinking about Lu Zu’s mantra, thinking that he could be safe. Unexpectedly, after the British and French troops entered the city, Ye Mingzhen was still searched out and caught the British war. When he saw him being captured, he was afraid of being humiliated, and secretly pointed out that there was a vast ocean outside the ship, meaning that he would die when he died. This Ye Daren is actually cheeky and pretend not to understand, only to read his Lu Zuzhen. Later, Ye Mingxi was taken to Hong Kong by the British, and was sent to India to go to the confinement. From time to time, he was a monkey-like exhibition for people to visit. He did not care, but instead said that he was "the sea Su Wu (ancient national hero in Han dynasty)" was really shameless to the extreme.

Because of his ruthlessness and superstitious spirits, the British and French coalition forces committed crimes and forced the Qing court to sign the Tianjin Treaty. An unclear mind governors could lead a country collapsing.

In the late Qing Dynasty, Empress Dowager Cixi took the power to control the whole China. At that time, Shandong was in the middle of boxer rebellions. These boxers were the branches of White Lotus believing. They practiced martial arts and spells daily. They claimed to have a deity's body protection and would not get killed with fire weapon.

At that time, the governor of Shandong, Li Bingheng, was very loyal but not clear-minded. Instead of prohibiting it, he allowed the people to gather and practice such magic. However, the successor of the governor, Yu Xian, was even more faint than Li Bingheng. He even regarded the boxing as a righteous and extraordinarily privileged, so that the organization of righteousness and boxing grew stronger and spread to the Northern provinces. There were two mysterious spells in the boxing, one is the golden bell, and the other is the red shade. The golden bell was originally a kind of martial art. It was said that after training, it can be invulnerable from any hurting.

What is the Red Shade?

It turns out that there are also girls who were not in the boxer's  group. If girls are teaching them such magical spells, they must wear red trousers, their heads tied with double knots and the left hand carries a red lantern. With a red silk scarf and a red folding fan in the right hand, first practice "Treading in the air" in the quiet room, and you can practice it in a few days. After that, as long as the red fan is a fan, people can vacate and go up to the cloud. Whenever the red light was spotted, it can be turned into a flame of fire and burn the enemy.

In the era of no bomber, if there was such a spell, then it will be invincible and invincible. Then why was White Lotus and the Taiping Heavenly Kingdom all annihilated and never succeeded? In particular, the spells were even more ridiculous--there are only eight words of "Tang Yu, Sha Yu, Ba Jie, Wu Kong (4 main characters in Journey to the West)". No matter what the spells are, they only have these eight words. Obviously it was a trick to deceive people but there were many fools and fools who believed in it.

The damn thing was that even the governor believed in it but also reported to the emperor. Cixi was originally skeptical, but at that time, for the foreigners of various countries to intervene in the abolition of the existing prince, she was annoyed and decided to send Governor Yulu to find out the truth. This Yulu had not checked whether the boxers were ture or not but already believed it and gave  the name as “Yihe Group”. With his encouragement, the boxers immediately increased to 100,000. The leaders were Wang Decheng, Cao Futian and Zhang Decheng.

The three men bribed a prostitute in Tianjin and she was trained as a female leader of the Red Shade. They were honored as the "Mr. Huanglian". Yu Yi listened to the arrival of the "Mother of the Virgin" and even dressed in a formal suit. She was greeted by the government office and paid homage to the local government. The "Mother of the Virgin" acting skill was so splended.   She was proud to sit on the seat, and her eyes were not even blinked when there were worshipping by the Governor.  Of course, even the Empress Dowager Cixi was deeply convinced that the Boxer Religion did have magical skills, so there was no fear of squatting and declaring war on the whole world. As a result, the battle was defeated, Cixi and Guangxu refuged in the Heat River, and finally had to be forced to sign the ugly treaty.

Belief is a good thing, but superstition must be a mistake, and if the authorities in power actually "Consulting from Ghost and God but no caring about the human beings", then "the in-predictability of ghost and/or deities " would lead the great disaster.   To be in charge the major national affair, definitely are strongly to be prohibited from superstitions.
